Changes in Bowel Habits

Alternating diarrhea and constipation, or changes in stool patterns? Your bowel may be sending a signal.

Changes in bowel habits are a somewhat vague but important symptom. Many people experience temporary bowel irregularities due to stress, dietary changes, or travel — these usually resolve on their own. However, if changes persist for more than 2–4 weeks, especially with other symptoms, further evaluation is worthwhile to rule out organic bowel disease.

Common Causes

😰

Functional Bowel Disorders (IBS)

The most common cause. Related to stress, diet, and sleep, presenting as alternating diarrhea and constipation with abdominal pain relieved by bowel movements. No structural abnormalities.

🔬

Colon Polyps

Larger polyps may affect bowel motility or cause partial obstruction, leading to changes in bowel patterns. Confirmed through colonoscopy.

🎗️

Colorectal Cancer

Persistent changes in bowel habits (especially narrowing stools, feeling of incomplete evacuation) are warning symptoms, particularly for those over 40.

💊

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease may cause chronic diarrhea, mucous stools, bloody stools, and recurrent abdominal pain.

🦠

Infectious Colitis

Acute diarrhea caused by bacterial or viral infection, usually accompanied by fever and abdominal pain, most cases resolve spontaneously.

  • ⚠️Accompanied by unexplained weight loss
  • ⚠️Associated bloody or mucous stools

  • ⚠️Family history of colorectal cancer

How Does Dr. Huang Evaluate?

During the visit, Dr. Huang will thoroughly understand the nature of bowel changes (frequency, consistency, presence of blood or mucus, duration), along with abdominal and necessary rectal examination. Based on the assessment, Dr. Huang will recommend whether colonoscopy or other imaging is needed. Not all bowel changes require immediate colonoscopy — the doctor will provide the most appropriate recommendation based on risk stratification.
